For the Objectenregister, I redesigned the ‘create new entity’ modal to be more intuitive and to clearly show only the relevant fields that need to be filled in by the user.

The Objectenregister (OR) is a tool that helps organizations manage and understand their assets in a structured way. Creating new entities is a core function within the Objectenregister. Users rely heavily on the ‘create entity’ modal. Not only to add new entities, but also to create their related components. However, the existing interface for creating entities used a technical layout that felt overwhelming and unclear, especially for less technical users. It lacked visual clarity, in some cases bloated with information, and failed to match the expectations of a modern, user-friendly experience.

My main goals were:

  • To design an attractive and intuitive interface for creating entities.

  • To make it immediately clear what users need to do and which fields they are expected to fill in.

The challenge

The design process

I started by analyzing the current modal in detail, mapping out what information and actions were truly essential across various usage scenarios. I collaborated with internal stakeholders to identify pain points, particularly how the technical look and rigid structure created a barrier to use.

Next, I explored examples from other products to gather inspiration for more intuitive creation flows. I focused on simplifying labels, improving field descriptions, and using data from usage statistics to optimize the design to the most common used workflow while creating a new entity.

I also tested early concepts with internal stakeholders. Once I had a refined prototype, I presented it to multiple clients, who responded positively and felt the new interface was much more approachable.

The outcome

The final design is a redesigned entity creation modal that offers a clean, non-technical experience. Key improvements include:

  • A simplified and visually balanced layout that only shows required inputs.

  • Usage of a realtime preview of how the new entity will appear, based on the description, type and the collection you put it in.

  • Optimized the modal to favor creating one entity because that is the most common user workflow.

  • The option to create multiple entities at a time can be turned on with a toggle switch.

  • Thoughtful use of concise labels and placeholder text to guide the user.

The result is a more accessible and efficient way for users to create entities, lowering the threshold to complete this core task and aligning better with the overall usability goals of the Objectenregister.
